he actor tells Vogue her hopes to create a more sustainable future for the fashion industry — and how the pandemic has given her a chance to reflect on how she can create meaningful change away from the screen.

Since rising to fame in the Harry Potter franchise, Emma Watson has become as well known for her work off screen as on it. The actor was appointed a UN Women goodwill ambassador in 2014, with the star urging men to stand up for gender equality in her famous HeForShe speech at the UN headquarters that year. She’s also played a leading role in the TIME’S UP movement that began in 2018, calling for an end to sexual harassment in Hollywood.

Now, Watson has added a new role to the list, joining the board of directors at Gucci owner Kering. The 30-year-old will be chair of the board’s sustainability committee — a fitting position for the actor, who has long had an interest in eco-friendly fashion.

“For me, sustainability is about the effects of today’s actions on our shared future,” Watson tells Vogue. “As the youngest member of Kering’s board, I hope to influence decisions that will impact future generations and the world that we leave them.”

Watson has regularly flown the flag for sustainable fashion on the red carpet, wearing a Calvin Klein dress made from recycled plastic bottles at the 2016 Met Gala and opting for only eco-friendly choices during her Beauty and the Beast press tour in 2017. She’s also a supporter of the Good On You app, which rates how ethical brands are, and guest-edited Vogue Australia’s sustainability issue in 2018.

It makes sense, then, that she’s now joining forces with Kering — which has become known for its sustainability efforts within the fashion industry. The company announced it would be going carbon neutral across its own operations and supply chain last year, and spearheaded the G7 Fashion Pact that’s seen 65 brands agree to commitments on mitigating climate change, improving biodiversity, and protecting our oceans.

Here, we caught up with Watson to find out more about her new role at Kering and what sustainable fashion means to her.

Our Shared Shelf was a title dreamed up by YOU, all of the amazing individuals who support and contribute to creating conversations around intersectionality, feminism and equal rights. It was important to me that Our Shared Shelf was not owned by me, but indeed, SHARED! You offered me the perfect title, and I have been astonished, humbled and filled with gratitude by how shared it has felt, with over a million people all over the world now active in the club. To those who’ve written long thoughtful threads, to the incredible authors who’ve answered Our Shared Shelf questions, to the hundreds of people globally who’ve hidden feminist titles alongside me over these last three years, you’ve made my wishes come true; I am truly part of the greatest feminist ninja gang the world has ever seen! Most importantly a massive THANK YOU for being part of my little piece of mischief. To sum up all that I have learned from this community would be an impossible task.

Circling back to the title for a moment. It annoyed me that Our Shared Shelf was constantly abbreviated to “O.S.S.”. The same letters (different order) as the international symbol for distress! However, over the years the three letters have developed their own beautiful meaning for me. This book club initially was my own kind of distress signal! Life, it turns out, can be difficult to navigate. We are often caught in the storm and lost at sea. The journey to becoming an independent thinker, activist and mischief maker is treacherous! OSS was my distress signal and call for help – and it came! It has become a beacon and guiding light. If you know someone sending out a jumbled distress signal, please pass on or tell them about OSS. Activism and change making can feel lonely. This is your tribe, this is your collective consciousness and we are raising it together.

At the beginning of every new year, and particularly so now as it is the beginning of a new decade, I’ve been prompted to look at my next steps. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking! First of all Happy 2020, it’s going to be an amazing year for all of you. This year I want to focus my energy on some new personal and professional opportunities and while I want to say YES to everything – it’s IMPOSSIBLE.

What does this mean? Moving forward the OSS board will be unmoderated but remain open keeping intact all previous conversations. I will not be making the regular bi-monthly book announcement via the board, I will be making future book recommendations through Instagram using the hashtag #oursharedshelf instead. My wish is that this community continues to share and announce their own book recommendations with this hashtag keeping what we’ve built together alive and well for the future. I am excited to see it continue to grow and mature. I might just be reading along with you! Keep your eyes peeled as I announce other books later this year.

Love

Emma

LMH is delighted to announce the appointment of nine new Visiting Fellows for a three year term (2019-22), and the appointment of Emma Watson as an Associate Fellow.

The Visiting Fellows are people drawn from a variety of backgrounds, callings and professions who will form a bridge between LMH’s academic community and the worlds they inhabit and represent. We are most grateful to our previous Visiting Fellows (2016-19) who contributed so much insight, knowledge and understanding within their specialist fields and culturally enhanced the life of the College.

As an Associate Fellow, Emma Watson, will continue her valuable work with the College with particular emphasis on promoting gender equality and women’s rights. Emma was previously an LMH Visiting Fellow (2016-19).

The idea of having non-academic visiting fellows at an Oxford College is not entirely new. Lord Nuffield, in founding his own College, wanted people drawn from government, politics, civil service and other institutions to play a role in the life of Nuffield College.

Names were canvassed from LMH’s governing body, of people of distinction whom we admired and whom we felt could add to the intellectual and cultural life of LMH. Those appointed span subject areas including: environment, sport, history, the performing arts, literature, feminism, law and public service.

Alan Rusbridger, Principal of LMH, said: “We welcome all our new Visiting Fellows and Emma Watson who has now been appointed an Associate Fellow. We look forward to them contributing to the life of LMH and to debate, perform, challenge and otherwise engage with the fellows, tutors, staff and students.

“We can learn much from them and we hope they treasure their time with us.”

Introducing Our New Supporter, Emma Watson

There is no better advocate for ethical and sustainable fashion than Emma Watson.

Throughout her career she’s been a driving force of the movement. Her work includes collaborations with ethical brands such as People Tree, her Instagram advocacy with @The Press Tour, and her leadership on Vogue Australia’s first sustainability issue.

That’s why we’re thrilled to announce Emma as a supporter of Good On You. We’ll be rating the clothes she wears on the red carpet and beyond, so she can be confident her outfits meet the highest standards of ethics and sustainability.

Here is what Emma has to say about why she’s using Good On You.

“Fashion helps shape our identities. What we wear signifies who we are and what we stand for. I support Good On You because I need to know my clothes do not harm our precious planet or its people.

On the red carpet we’re often asked not what we are wearing but ‘who’. It’s as if the ideas behind the clothes – the label, the designer, the collection – have more meaning than the garment itself. But there’s something missing.

There’s a bigger story to be told about the conditions in which our clothes are made, the resources that have been used and the impact they’ve had on communities.

Good On You is my benchmark for sustainable fashion. This means that when I’m given a platform to speak about my choice of outfit, I will have a meaningful story to tell. And it’s powerful.

But I am just one person. In truth, we can all play a part in driving fashion to be more sustainable and ethical. By choosing to wear clothes from labels that embrace transparent, creative and innovative production methods; and by re-wearing, recycling, swapping and thrifting.

Together we are building a bigger, better movement every day.

Fashion is a creative force. It has the power to persuade, to influence, and transform. When fashion truly embraces transparency and sustainability, other spheres will follow. We’re on a journey towards a more sustainable future.

This is just the beginning.”

Today is also the launch of a new look and feel for Good On You. We want to make it easier for you to discover ethical fashion, find all the info you need, and read all the stories you want on our website.

We’ve worked with a team of designers and developers to rebrand and rebuild our site, and we have some exciting new things planned for later in the year too.

So from all the team at Good On You, thank you for your support we literally couldn’t do what we do without it.

Let’s make 2019 the biggest year for ethical fashion so far.
